Value Education Through Religious Scriptures: A Secular Approach For Maintaining Peace

Abstract

Many societies around the world have been entangled in horrifying internal and external wars that have killed millions of people. Fear and distrust are the worst kind of enemy for the development of the peaceful society, happy society and a compassionate society. Peace is not just the province of politicians and soldiers but also of ordinary people. It is not so much a peace that is kept, but a peace that is created. Education for peace could be a significant input for transformation of mind of our children. Society devoid of religious values does not provide the nourishment that can sustain a civilization that will bring out the highest qualities in people and allow them to fulfill their purpose in life. Religious teachings have fundamental role in human attitudes and contribution to human flourishing. Without talking of dogmas of any religion we can teach simply about how to be a good human being- how to develop a happier society and what is lacking in modern society with help of religious teachings. We must appreciate its search for truth and its endeavour for the uplift of masses. All Scriptures whether it is the Bible, Bhagavad-Gita, Quran or Guru Granth Sahib, teach values and attitudes applicable to all human being beautifully and aim for just and harmonious society. Despite the wonderful things mentioned in these holy Granths, we continue to remain deaf to these ideas and hence continue to deny our spirits the wisdom that is contained therein. Through this paper an attempt has been made to highlight the significance of imparting education in social, moral and spiritual values with the help of ethical teachings of great religions in order to maintain peace on this earth. Writers have also underlined some strategies to make such endeavour achievable.
