Abstract

The Rokeach value survey (RVS) scale, comprised of 18 terminal and 18 instrumental values, was employed on the 180 respondents in the age group of 10-15 years to distinguish the moral values between the children of the Bal Vikas and the non-Bal Vikas centers using the non-parametric tests and PCA (Principal Component Analysis). An appraisal of skewness and kurtosis in the terminal and instrumental values of children between the Bal Vikas and the non-Bal Vikas centres revealed that the data (Ranged within ±1) does not differ significantly from normality and is well suited for further analysis. The non-parametric ANOVA by Kruskal-Wallis H test for both terminal and instrumental values exhibited that the children from these two centers were conspicuously distinct. The Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests identified the key distinguishing terminal values i.e. wisdom, inner-harmony, pleasure, a comfortable life, true friendship, family security, salvation and an exciting life, among them the principal values that peculiar the children between the Bal Vikas and the non-Bal Vikas centers were wisdom, inner-harmony, family security, pleasure and a comfortable life. While the prime discriminating instrumental values were identified viz., cheerful, broad-minded, logical, courageous, loving, ambitious, polite, and forgiving, of which principal values were independent, honest, capable, obedient, polite, broad-minded, and courageous that distinct the children between the Bal Vikas and the non-Bal Vikas centers. These principal values could be used in formulating the model for value education in school curriculum and the necessity of value oriented shaping of children to ponder their own behavior and actions.
