Abstract

The PROD-screen is a widely used self-administered questionnaire, designed to screen individu-als at risk for developing psychosis. However, Hindi adaptation and psychometric validation of this tool are yet to be done. Therefore, this study aimed to translate and validate the PROD-screen in Hindi language. The PROD-screen was translated from English to Hindi by three bilinguals, and again back translated by another three bilinguals. These translations and back translations were reviewed together, and discrepancies were resolved. The Hindi translated version of the PROD-screen was administered to the sample of 140 first degree relatives of patients with Schizophrenia, of age range 17–52 years. The WHO Quality of Life-BREF Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and General Health Questionnairre-12 were also administered to the sample. Results indicate that, the Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha= 0.85, p<0.01) of the scale is significantly high. Construct validity was assessed by correlating the scores of PROD-screen with WHO Quality of Life-BREF Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and GHQ-12, and the obtained correlation coefficients range from 0.56–0.76. Sensitivity and specificity of the tool were found quite efficient at the cut-off score of 3 for specific symptoms and a cut-off score of 8 for total items of PROD-screen, in detecting prodromal symptoms of Schizophrenia. The findings of the study suggest that the Hindi version of PROD-screen has sound psychometric properties. Therefore, it can be efficiently used in the screening of prodromal symptoms in Indian population.
