Abstract

Out of 282 patients having post-operative wound infections, 196 yielded bacterial growth. From 196 patients, 108 (55.1%) were males and 88 (44.9%) were females. Majority of pus samples were from surgical ward 112 (57%) followed by ENT 36(18.3%), Obs&Gynae 24(12.2%), Orthopedics 14(7.1%), Neuro-Surgery, and Burn & plastic Surgery 5 (2.5%) ward together. Gram negative bacteria were seen to be more prevalent 128 (59.2%) as compared to Gram positive bacteria 88 (40.8%). Staphylococcus species 86 (39.8%) were isolated as the major pathogens causing suppurative infection followed by Escheriachia coli 52 (24%), Pseudomonas species 30 (13.8%), Enterobacter species 20 (9.2%), Klebsiella Species 12 (5.5%), Proteus species 8 (3.7%), Acinetobacter species 6 (2.7%) and Enterococcus spp. 2 (0.9%). Gram positive cocci showed high sensitivity to most of the drugs tested such as Vancomycin (100%), Linezolid (100%), Teicoplanin(100%) etc but was found to be highly resistant to Penicillin (100%), Levofloxacin (100%) and Norfloxacin (100%). Pseudomonas spp. showed high sensitivity to Colistin (100%), Polymyxin B (100%) and Amikacin and it was found to be resistant to Ampicillin/sulbactam (100%), Cotrimoxazole (100%). Other Gram negative bacilli showed high sensitivity to Amikacin (92%) and was highly resistant to Aztreonam(100%) and Ceftazidime (100%). Post-operative wound infections are a serious medical Problem that has to be tackled due to its increased morbidity, mortality and medical care costs. An active Surveillance program is recommended.
