Online published on 6 April, 2019. Abstract Background Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infection in human being and major cause of seeking medical opinion. The causative agents of UTI varies from place to place and also varies in their antibiotic susceptibility pattern. Objectives This study was under taken to determine the spectrum of uropathogens and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern. Materials and Method A cross sectional study was conducted in microbiology laboratory at Santosh Hospital, Ghaziabad. Total 400 midstream clean catch urine samples were collected and processed from Jan. 2018 to June 2018. Isolates were identified by conventional methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility was performed by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. Results Out of 400 urine samples 108 showed significant growth of micro-organisms. The prevalence of UTI was found 27.0%. Females were found more prone to develop more UTI in comparison to males. E. coli was the common isolate found in study. Other isolated organisms among gram negative bacteria were Proteus species, K. pneumoniae, Enterobacter species, P. aeruginosa followed by Citrobacter. Among gram positive bacteria S. aureus, CONS and S. saprophyticus were the organisms isolated. Enterobacteriaceae isolate shows maximum sensitivity to Amikacin, Piperacillin Tazobactam, Imipenem, Cefoperazone Sulbactam, Nitrofurantoin and Ampicillin Sulbactam. P. aeruginosa isolates showed higher sensitivity to Piperacillin Tazobactam, Imipenem, Amikacin followed by Ceftazidime and Cefepime. Staphylococcus isolates showed higher sensitivity to Vancomycin, Linezolid followed by Gentamycin, Nitrofurantoin and Tetracycline. Conclusions Empirical treatment of UTI should be based on correct knowledge of spectrum of uropathogens and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern only.
