Abstract

In India, marriage rite is considered as an important rite. Marriage is not only a social bond between a man and a woman but also a bond between two families. It provides legal as well as social security to carry on the offspring or lineage. Now in India, a proposal has been put up to increase the minimum marriage age of girls from 18 years to 21 years with the view to uniform the marriage age of girls and boys and also to empower women. The main purpose of the study is to know the opinion of the people regarding the minimum marriage age of girls in rural and urban areas and which issues will reduce due to this decision and its positive impact. For this purpose, the data was collected from the Nagpur rural and urban areas. The findings reveal that a large number of female respondents are in favour of increasing the marriage age of girls from 18 years to 21 years. The study also reveals that according to the people living in rural areas, belonging to low-income groups and above 35 years of age the minimum age of marriage should be 18 years while according to people in urban areas, younger generation and higher income groups, the minimum age of marriage should be 21 years or above.
