Abstract

A study was undertaken during the period of 2009–2010, to assess the diversity, abundance and status of ichthyo species in Pagladia river, an important tributary among the tributaries of the north bank of the Brahmaputra valley. This tributary originates from Bhutan Hills, passes through undivided Nalbari district and finally connects with the Brahmaputra river. Fish sampling was done in four different seasons from five survey stations with the help of different types of nets and other local fishing gears. During survey it was observed that the icthyofauna belongs to 7 orders 17 families 47 genus 71 species while Cyprinidae family was dominant over the other families. All the collected fishes are recognized as ornamental, cultivable and food fishes. Blasting, poisoning and habitat destruction are the major threats to collected fish species. Out of these recorded fish species from Pagladia river during survey, 49 were assessed for threat category. Finally it may be concluded that Pagladia is rich in fish diversity.
