Abstract Orchestra 10SC (benzpyrimoxan of M/s Nichino India Pvt Ltd., Hyderabad), a novel insecticide with blue toxicity label, was evaluated @ 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150 g a.i. ha-1 (500, 750, 1000, 1250 and 1500 ml ha1, respectively) at Ropar and Ludhiana districts of Punjab, against the brown plant hopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stal.) and white backed plant hopper (WBPH), Sogatella furcifera infesting basmati rice/rice during 2017 and 2018 at Ludhiana; at Ludhiana and Ropar during 2021. A total of four experiments were conducted on basmati/ non-basmati rice. The test insecticide was compared with the check, imidacloprid 17.8 SL (Confidor 200 SL) during kharif 2017-18 and with Chess 50 WG (pymetrozine) during kharif 2021. Per cent reduction in Orchestra 10 SC @ 100 g a.i. ha-1 basmati was 67.41, 86.23 and 77.92 after 3, 7 and 10 days after application (DAA). Superiority of Orchestra 10 SC @ 100 g a.i. ha-1 was maintained with 2.28, 1.29 and 2.49 WBPH hill-1 being at par with Orchestra 10 SC @ 150 g a.i. ha-1. The per cent reduction over the control was 71.13, 84.79 and 75.59 after 3, 7 and 10 DAA, respectively. The non-significant differences were observed in spider population after 3, 7 and 10 DAA. The new molecule Orchestra 10 SC @ 100 g a.i. ha-1 (1000 ml ha-1) was more effective against rice plant hoppers infesting rice/basmati rice and will help in better management of these insect pests.
