Thamarai Pond and Passi Pond, occurring in an isolated hamlet of Kanyakumari District, far beyond the municipal limits, revealed a direct correlation between human intervention and decreasing quality of water. The physico-chemical parameters such as pH, EC, DO, BOD, Acidity, Alkalinity and ions of calcium, sodium, chloride, iron, copper, zinc, manganese, magnesium, potassium and sulphate recorded from monthly samples of water from the ponds studied, revealed a general decline in the suitability for domestic use even in apparently clean water sources. The study reveals the negative impact of human activity on the whole and of the callous use of chemicals in agriculture, which has been quite discernible in the Passi Pond cited, which invites the attention of all concerned to conserve our water resources of the remote villages.
