Biodegradation of 2-picoline by immobilized cells of Bacillus cereus GMHS Reddy D. Madhusudan, Saxena Neeti*, Reddy Gopal Department of Microbiology, Osmania University, Hyderabad, India. * Department of Botany, Koti Women's College, Osmania University, Hyderabad, India. Abstract Biodegradation of 2-picoline was carried out using Bacillus cereus GMHS. When the bacterium was incubated for 24 hours in mineral salts medium with 2-picoline as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen, 2-picoline degradation ability of the bacterium was found to be high during initial 16 hours after which, it decreased due to sporulation. Immobilization of the bacterium in sodium alginate beads maintained the biodegradation capability for further 2 days under increased concentration of 2-picoline. Top Key words Biodegradation, 2-picoline, Bacillus cereus GMHS, Sporulation, Immobilization. Top | |
