Awareness and attitude regarding cryopreservation of sperm and oocyte among married couples of Dera Bassi, Mohali, Punjab

Abstract

Introduction

The cryopreservation of sperm and oocyte are recent technology being developed to treat infertility Cryopreservation is a technique in which sperms, eggs and embryos are frozen at a sub-zero temperature to preserve them for future when the need arises.

Aim

The aim of the study is to assess the awareness and attitude regarding cryopreservation of sperm and oocyte among married couples residing in selected urban areas of Dera Bassi, district Mohali, Punjab.

Material and Methods

A non-experiment, quantitative research approach and descriptive cross sectional survey research designs was used in present study. The sample of 80 married couples was selected by using convenience sampling technique. A structured questionnaire and 5 point Likert Scale was prepared to assess the awareness and attitude regarding cryopreservation of sperm and oocyte among married couples.

Results

The findings revealed that majority (66.25% husbands and 70% wives) of married couples had average awareness and majority (57.50% husbands and 43.75% wives) had negative attitude regarding cryopreservation of sperm and oocyte. There is association of awareness regarding cryopreservation of sperm and oocyte among married couples with demographic variables number of children, education of wife, type of family and there association of attitude regarding cryopreservation of sperm and oocyte among married couples with demographic variables age of wife, years of married life, number of children, religion, education of wives, type of family.

Conclusion

It is concluded that majority of married couples had average awareness and negative attitude regarding cryopreservation of sperm and oocyte. Fertility preservation counseling needs to be required among married couples to increase the awareness and change the attitude regarding cryopreservation of sperm and oocyte.
