The higher the proportion of workers in secondary and tertiary activities, the more developed is the society and vice-versa. In the present study, the emphasis is on the work participation rate of the people of Himachal Pradesh. An attempt has been made to comprehend the ruralurban and gender-wise differences in the work participation rate of Himachal Pradesh. The present study has utilized secondary data for the 1981, 1991, 2001, and 2011 census years. The data have been obtained from the Census of India and Primary Census Abstract. Graphs, Diagrams as well as Tables have been used to depict the variations in the work participation rate among both male and female workers. The study reveals that the work participation rate has remained considerably low, even though it has increased over the decades. However, the most noticeable issues have been the overwhelming growth of marginal workers to that of main workers and female workers to that of male workers.
