Abstract

“Women who Defend themselves, Defend the Nation: A Pioneering Mission of Education for Women's Empowerment in North India” focuses its discussion on the impact of education on women's lives, recognizing the enterprising educational work of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary (CJM) in North India. Education is one of the powerful instruments of change and development in the society. Discussing the origins and development of JM (Jesusand Mary) mission of education, it explores the impact of the pioneering works of the society for women's education in India. It highlights the spirit and the founding vision of the JM educational mission in tune with the Church's universal mission of education. The 165 year old JM spirit has been adapted to the Indian context and proved to be a legacy of its own, empowering women to defend themselves. Thus, the JM educational tradition enables women to mediate the impact of the family on their economic and social roles, so as to be successful in the gamut of roles women assume in the society.
