Abstract

Education is the most important means by which individuals and society can build capacity, overcome barriers, and expand opportunities for their well being. In the context of education of Scheduled Tribes children, finding a balance between preserving tribal cultural identity and mainstreaming them seems crucial. It means building education programs that ensure a tribal child’s success in mainstream schools. It is seen that the current education system is mostly designed for the dominant group. The situation of education of tribal children is related to the quality of education in general. Tribal children possess the basic cognitive abilities and psychological dispositions for successful participation in schools; and their low achievement levels are attributed to school-related variables as would apply to non-tribal students. There are 15 Scheduled Tribes in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The Schedules Tribes population of the state was reported to be 11.34 lakh, constituting just 0.57% of total population, however, population of de-notified and nomadic tribes has been found significant in many districts of state. The present paper attempts to examine tribal situation in Uttar Pradesh and reviewing the policy perspective of tribal education as well as status of tribal education in the state. The paper is based on secondary data and pertinent literature.
