Abstract

Covid-19 has had a devastating effect on the education sector, especially so in the case of India. Education is one medium through which lower middle class and even poorer sections aspire to rise out of poverty and dream for a better future for their kids. For this they were prepared to spend a substantial portion of their monthly income to send their kids to low budget private schools instead of government schools which had poorer results. And it is this segment which has suffered a devastating setback during this pandemic. Therefore, without budgetary support of any kind, most of such schools are on verge of closure leading to loss of jobs for teachers and staff on one hand and loss of learning and an impaired future for the students on the other. These schools have suffered because they are dependent only on fees for revenue and do not have any surplus. The government must provide some budgetary support to them and also make it possible to access funds from NBFCs and banks. As the students enrolled with private schools comprise nearly half of total students the state cannot be negligent towards their needs.
