Abstract Education is an essential tool for achieving sustainability. People around the world recognize that current economic development trends are not sustainable and that public awareness, education, and training are key focus areas for moving society toward sustainability. Education has always been considered as the only key component of human development and greatest liberating force. Hence, traditionally, education has always held the most venerable position in our society. It is considered as fundamental to all round development of the individual both at material and spiritual levels. Sustainability education (ES), Education for Sustainability (EfS), and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) are interchangeable terms describing the practice of teaching for sustainability.The challenges also looked into and remedies offered. Besides creating environment for public awareness, training and human security, the appropriate strategy for introduction of value-education & admitting that providing resources for educating the masses is the biggest challenge. This paper attempts to examine the issues and challenges & status achieved relating to education for sustainable development in India.
