Sustainable development - Needs to be a way of life Dr. Luthra Suman Associate Professor, Department of Economics, S A Jain (PG) College, Ambala City Online published on 17 April, 2023. Abstract The English word ‘Sustainable’ refers to the Hindi language word ‘DHARNIY’ -jo dharan karne yogay ho, jise vahan kiya ja sake- means the load that we are able to bear. These lines are in conformity with the need of much talked about concept of sustainable development, and were perhaps written even before the famous Stockholm Conference of 1972. But even after 50 years of all the furore, we, knowingly or unknowingly, have been involved in reckless, mindless and directionless exploitation of our scarce resources in the name of development. This paper discusses the concept of sustainable development with worldwide concerns. This paper also highlights the important features of environment, and consequences of ignoring it. An attempt has also been made to discuss the problem of identifying the pollution contributing countries and dilemma of less developed countries. At the end paper emphasises on the need to look at the problem from My Responsibility perspective and the importance of taking small steps in everyday life that will lead to a big change.
