Abstract

The second half of twenty first century is definitely going to visualize far reaching changes at various fronts of human life and existence where the whole academic scenario will be significantly changed because of the mass scale intrusion of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). To cater to the emerging demands of the life and career at personal, socio-cultural and professional front, and to bridge up the gap of ‘digital divide’ between traditional education system and the ultra-modern automated education system the libraries of institutes, colleges and universities will have to play a pivotal role in the transitional phases through which the Indian society is destined to undergo. Needless to say that library as the brain of academic system will have to cope up with the problems and issues on managerial front as the service providers, and on implementation fronts as the end users. Authors, through this study, attempt to speculate and elicit the various problems faced by authorities, and the staff during library automation process. The staffs’ hesitance and resistance to change towards automation and unsatisfactory library software problems are the major hindrances to speed-up the automation process. Moreover, ‘human incompetence’ and ‘poor record maintenance’ is posing the biggest problem in library automation. It finally highlights the key suggestions for better implementation of library automation and to troubleshoot the hurdles faced during pre and post automation.
