Online published on 18 June, 2014.

Abstract

It is seen that the freedom of speech and expression of individuals and organizations encounter numerous impediments, State being one of the most conspicuous perpetrators of violation of this human right. The paper presents the historical viewpoint regarding censorship imposed on various media in the context of the democratic set up of the nation. Both print and electronic media have been victims of this form of control by the government, before and after independence. It also examines the concept in the present digital and global era wherein censorship needs a fresh perspective and seeks answer to the query about the relevance of this archaic means of maintaining control over media by the State.
