Abstract In banking field, electronic paper currency identifying system plays a significant role. Fake notes in India in denominations of Rs.100, 500 and 1000 are being flooded into the system. As the technology growth is improving rapidly which leads to counterfeiting problem much serious. In this article, image processing based currency identification is described. Counterfeit paper currency is identified by two characteristics which include identification mark and serial number. When the currency image is matched with predefined currency image, then it is characterized as original currency. Every time the currency is verified by using image processing techniques. The process of currency identification includes edge detection, image segmentation, and characteristic extraction of the images. The magnitude of the image characteristic extraction is operator by Sobel.
