Abstract

The study attempt to make comparative cost benefit and constraint analysis in the cultivation of hybrid and improved varieties of rice. Primary data on constraints and cost benefit aspects were collected through pre tested well structured schedule from five villages of two blocks. A sample size of 50 farmers each for hybrid and improved varieties of rice cultivation was used and the respondents were randomly selected. For comparison, Cost-benefit analysis approach was used and it revealed that the cost of cultivation for hybrid rice (Rs. 73312.17) was comparatively higher as compared to that of improved varieties of rice (Rs. 71151.57). However, the net farm income over Cost D received by the hybrid rice cultivating farmers (Rs. 20945.33) was more than the net farm income of the improved varieties of rice cultivating farmers (Rs. 14241.78). Cost-benefit ratio for hybrid rice cultivation (1.29) was greater than the improved varieties of rice cultivation (1.20). Non availability of fertilizer in time and their high prices, attack of pest and disease, poor quality of seed, lack of technical guidance, scarcity and untimely availability of seed, and unavailability of skilled labour in time were the major constraints in rice cultivation. The paper has concluded that the cultivation of hybrid variety of rice has benefitted the farmers to a large extent and improved rice production throughout the state. Awareness about the cultivation of hybrid variety of rice should be given as against the growing traditional varieties or improved varieties of rice in the state.
