Abstract

In Theni district nearly 90% of the river waterVaigai and its tributaries Suruliar, Kottakudiar (Theniar), Varahanathi and Mullaiperiyar are being tapped for drinking and remaining is being utilized for irrigation. Hence there is a need to assess the pollution status of all these rivers which are flowing through Theni district. During its ways these rivers are crossing several towns and municipalities. The River water is widely used for bathing, washing and religious purposes. It receives effluents, and runoff from the villages and towns and fertilizer leachates of agricultural land along its banks. So, water samples were collected from these 21 sampling stations in two different season and the samples were analysed in the lab for the parameters such as pH, color, odor, EC, DO (%), BOD, COD, Nitrates, Chlorides, Sodium, Potassium and microbial population. The results revealed that all the samples exceed its limits of river water quality standard for drinking. These results help the policy makersand developmentplanners tocurb the pollution of river by various means.
