Heavy Metal Accumulation in Okra Plant (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) Grown in Fortified Municipal Solid Waste Compost Applied Soil Kalyan V.S. Reddy Kiran*, Backiyavathy M.R. Abstract To evaluate the fortified municipal solid waste compost (FMSWC) on heavy metals content in soil and okra plant under field condition in Thondamuthur block of Coimbatore district. The experiment was conducted with 12 treatments with randomized block design replicated thrice. The experimental soil belongs to Irgur series (Typic Haplustalf), loamy sand in texture, non-calcareous, slightly alkaline in reaction with low available nitrogen, high available phosphorus and potassium. The soil is sufficient in iron (3.97 mg kg−1) and manganese (11.3 mg kg−1), deficient in zinc (0.93 mg kg−1) and copper (0.66 mg kg−1) and with traces of heavy metals. The results showed that application of 100% Rec. NPK + FMSWC with poultry manure 10% (9: 1) @ 5.0 t ha−1 (T8) registered maximum lead and nickel contents in soil and okra plant followed by T12. The treatment T12 (100% Rec. NPK + FMSWC with SSP @ 5.0 t ha−1) recorded the maximum cadmium content in soil and okra plant which was below the permissible limits as prescribed by World Health Organisation (2007).
