Diversity Mapping and Characterization of Mango Ecotypes of Moovandan

Abstract

Kerala blessed with humid tropical climate and rich diversity of mango. Moovandan was a very common cultivar in homesteads of this state. A survey was conducted at mango rich homesteads of Pazhayannur region of Thrissur district of Kerala during 2013–2016 and spotted five Moovandan types of mango viz Enna Moovandan, Cheriya Moovandan, Pachha Moovandan, Vella Moovandan and Ezikode Moovandan. These mango types were characterized adopting standard mango descriptors developed by the IPGRI. The characters, precocious bearing (starts from third year onwards), perpetual, regular flowering, the colour of young leaves pulp aroma and polyembryony were identical among all mango types. The great variation was noticed in tree characters, leaf, fruit characters. Oblong fruit shape of mango type identified at Ezhikode area of Panjal panchayath, as it was located adjacent to river bank of Bhrathpuzha, showed a greater variation in fruit length and stone length with other types. Cheriya Moovandan type showed greater variation of size viz fruit length, width and weight with other types. The fruit weight ranged from 106 to 250 grams, fruit length ranged from 6.8 to 12.74 cm, percentage of pulp in fruit ranged from 54.54 to 67.23, stone from 16.04 to 27.94 and peel from 14.86 to 22.92 and total soluble solids of the fruits ranged from 10.6 to 13.3o brix. Fruit colour showed three variant viz Green, Yellow, Greenish Yellow and pulp showed two variants viz Yellow and Yellow orange. Quantity of stone fiber showed two variants viz low and high.
