Abstract A laboratory study was undertaken at the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Adhiparasakthi Agricultural College, Kalavai, Vellore district Tamil Nadu. Water quality has great significance in arid and semi-arid regions and it is based on the salinity, sodicity and permeability. In this study water samples were collected representing different sources for irrigation in the peak dry season from various regions of that vembi village. Different tests were conducted to determine the salinity (Cl−, HCO3−, SO42-, CO32-). The analysis of water samples showed that various quality parameters are coming under the suitable/safe category indicating that these water can be used for irrigation safely in all types of soils without creating any adverse effect like salinity, sodicity or toxicity of specific ions. Similarly, it was concluded that these waters can be safely used for irrigation for all types of crops grown by the farmers of the Vembi village, Vellore district of Tamil Nadu.
