Abstract

Air pollution is one of the serious problems faced by the people globally due to its transboundary dispersion of pollutants over the entire world. Plants responses towards air pollution are assessed by air pollution tolerance index (APTI) value. Four physiological and biochemical parameters namely relative water content, leaf pH, ascorbic acid, and total chlorophyllwere usedtocomputetheAPTI. A study was conducted at Mettupalayam, Tamil Nadu by using fifteen tree species to know their air pollution tolerance index (APTI) level. Three zones namely residential zone, reserve forest zone, heavy traffic zone were identified from Mettupalayam for estimating the air pollution tolerance index (APTI). The tree species Bauhinia racemosa, Albizia saman, Chloroxylon swietenia, Azadirachta indica and Pongamia pinnata are formed to be highly resistant against air pollution.
