Online published on 23 December, 2016. Abstract There is a strong ‘opinion’ among farmers, scientists, environmentalists and administrators, that ginger cultivation is hazardous to soil, water, biodiversity. ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Mysuru district undertook a study on the techno-economic aspects of ginger cultivation in view of formulating ‘informed opinion’ about ginger farming. The study was conducted in Hunsur taluk of Mysuru district in March 2016 by using the participatory method focussed group discussions with farmers. It was found that ginger farming in Mysuru is indeed an issue to be addressed on priority by the district administration. On the technology front, high seed rate and excessive use of chemical fertilizers need extension support to arrest escalating production costs and degradation of natural resources; on the economic front, local farmers leasing lands to Kerala farmers for ginger farming is bringing unprecedented revenue to the farmers and is generating additional employment opportunities. However, the intensive cultivation practices and volatile prices make it a risky venture, whether it is Kerala farmers or the local farmers.
