Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at Research Farm, Department of Agronomy, Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola during kharif season of 2013–14. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with five tillage treatments replicated four times. The tillage treatments constituted of (1) Zero tillage, (2) Conventional tillage (one ploughing+one harrowing by tyne cultivator+one harrowing by blade harrow), (3) Very deep tillage (one subsoiler+one ploughing+one harrowing by tyne cultivatior+one harrowing by blade harrow), (4) Shallow tillage by tractor (one tyne cultivator+one blade harrow), (5) Shallow tillage by bullock (one ploughing by MB plough+two harrowing by bakhar). The other intercultivation practices were kept common as recommended, except at Zero Tillage. All the soil physical properties i.e., soil moisture content, bulk density, porosity, penetration resistance, mean weight diameter, hydraulic conductivity and rate of infiltration were significantly improved with very deep tillage consisting of subsoiler+ploughing+two harrowing. The next best treatment that improved physical properties of soil to some extent was that of conventional tillage; consisting of ploughing+two harrowing. Shallow and zero tillage treatments were found inferior in improving soil physical properties.
