Online published on 15 December, 2016. Abstract The present study analyzed the consumption pattern of households in rural and urban India based on the secondary data obtained from NSSO. There was a significant difference in the consumption expenditure between rural and urban areas. The MPCE on all food items and non-food items showed an increasing trend in both rural and urban India. The percentage change in expenditure on total food item was higher in urban areas in comparison with rural areas, whereas intotal HVAC, the percentage change was higher in rural areas in comparison with urban counterparts. The consumption of fruits and nuts inboth rural and urban areas were the major contributing factor for high percentage change in consumption of HVAC, followed by egg, fish and meat, vegetables and milk and milk products.
