Abstract

Background

Stress among adolescents is one among top health concerns in the world. To de-stress a 20 minutes guided Meditation on Twin Hearts (MTH) is introduced for female adolescents and its effects are being studied.

Aim

The present study aimed to understand the efficacy of MTH on perceived stress and QOL among female adolescents.

Setting and design

This study included 163 female adolescents of age group 15 to 19 years, with a mean age of 15.91. Among them 79 subjects were allotted to the experimental group, while the remaining 84 in the control group.

Method

Questionnaires were used to assess the perceived stress (Cohen's perceived stress scale) and QOL (KINDL-R) of subjects before and after meditation practice for a period of one month. Also, an open ended questionnaire was administered to record meditative experiences.

Statistical analysis

Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were employed.

Results

A significant decrease in the perceived stress levels, a significant increase in the overall QOL were observed in the experimental group compared to the control group. Changes were also seen in the various domains of QOL after meditation practice.

Conclusion

MTH was found to be useful in improving female adolescent mental health and QOL.
