Economic Assessment of Post Harvest Losses of Kesar Mango in South Gujarat

Abstract

A study was conducted to estimate the marketable surplus of kesar mango, assess the post harvest loss and identify the major sources of post harvest losses. An attempt was also made to estimate total economic losses at state level due to total post harvest losses at each stage of marketing. A systematic study was conducted in South Gujarat region of Gujarat state. The data were collected by interviewing total 108 mango growers, 16 wholesalers and 48 retailers. The data were collected for the mango season 2015–16. Results shows that, total marktable surplus in kesar mango was around 93 per cent. Farmers have sold their mango mainly through cooperatives and wholesalers in region. Total post harvest losses in kesar mango were recorded to be of 27 per cent, in which maximum loss was occurred at retailers level. The major source of post harvest loss was pest and diseases. Around 54.23 corer of rupees was annually looses due to post harvest losses in kesar mango in Gujarat state.
