Abstract

Novaluron a highly effective insect growth regulator used against many lepidopterous pest. Insect growth regulators consist of various compounds acting on insects of different orders by inhibiting chitin formation (Ishaaya and Casida, 1974; Post et al. 1974), thereby causing abnormal endocuticular deposition and abortive moulting (Mulder and Gijswijt, 1973). The bioefficacy of novaluron is generally noticed during moulting as it affects the process of chitin deposition due to which the insect does not complete the developmental process and dies. Saxena, Kumar and Khattri (2001) studied the effects of diamino-furyl-s-triazine and benzoyl phenyl urea on the growth and reproduction of Pericallia ricini F. and reported that both chemicals effected the growth and reproduction significantly. Cadogan et al. (1997) conducted a field trial in Canada to determine the efficacy of tebufenozide against Choristoneura fumiferana and observed that the spraying of this insecticide effect the development significantly. The pests selected for bioassay assessment are 3rd & 5th instar larvae of Euproctis icilia Stoll and Euproctis fraterna Moore of the family Lymantriidae belong to order Lepidoptera. Nakano and Romano (2002) tested lufenuron, triflumuron, azadirachtin and tebufenozide against C. capitata. Lufenuron and azadirachtin showed hundred per cent efficiency until six days after the oviposition peak, while triflumuron showed an average of 80% efficiency during the evaluation period.
