Abstract

In forensic investigations, even minute details can serve as crucial trace evidence, establishing connections between crime scenes, victims, and suspects through meticulous analysis aided by sophisticated techniques. However, trace evidence, while a compelling asset, can also become a double-edged sword, potentially ensnaring the innocent in webs of conspiracy. Notably, trace evidence extends to diverse scenarios, including the intricate interplay between cosmetics, skin health, and forensic casework. Unraveling pertinent insights from cosmetic traces becomes imperative to establish links between individuals, victims, and crime scenes. This study investigates into a distinctive and noteworthy form of trace evidence – the vermilion stain – a pigment routinely employed by married Indian women. These trace elements assume significance in criminal inquiries as they can wield substantial evidentiary influence within legal proceedings, determining the presence or absence of individuals at crime locales. Although scant research has explored this facet, existing studies have employed varied chromatographic and spectroscopic technique’s to scrutinize the composition of Sindoor, the vermilion pigment. Collating these limited yet invaluable investigations, this review paper will provide a comprehensive overview of prior research on vermilion stains. Furthermore, the study acknowledges the health implications for females utilizing vermilion, shedding light on potential hazards stemming from the presence of harmful chemicals. Despite its minimal application, even trace quantities of cosmetics raise health concerns. By amalgamating these multifaceted aspects, this research contributes to the broader understanding of trace evidence, encompassing its legal, forensic, and health dimensions. The abstract encapsulates the endeavour to consolidate existing knowledge, highlight gaps, and underscore the intrinsic value of trace evidence like vermilion stains in forensic contexts.
