Physical properties and transmission of sponge gourd mosaic virus Pawar N.B., Jagtap P.K., Deshmukh R.W. Department of Plant Pathology, Marathwada Agriculture University, Parbhani, (M.S.). Abstract The virus causing mosaic in sponge gourd was readily transmissible by mechanical means from sponge gourd to sponge gourd and to other plant species belonging to Cucurbitaceae. The virus was also transmissible by four aphid species viz; Aphis gossypii, A. craccivora, Brevicoryne brassicae and Dactinotus carthami in non-persistent manner whereas, it was not transmissible through the seeds of virus infected fruit of sponge gourd. The virus was found to be inactivated between temperatures 65 to 75°C and between dilutions of 10−4 to 10−5 and remains viable upto 5 days (120 hrs) at room temperature (28–30°C). On the basis of symptomatology on sponge gourd, mechanical, seed and aphid transmission and physical properties; the virus is tentatively identified as watermelon mosaic virus-1 (WMV-1) presently known as Papaya ring spot virus-watermelon strain (PRSV-W).
