Vestigial root structure of Cuscuta Reflexa and c. chinensis Jadhav S. B., Toro S.V. Government of Maharashtra's Rajaram College, Kolhapur Online published on 1 May, 2020. Abstract Present research paper gives an account on germination as well as morphological and anatomical abnormalities of vestigial roots of Cuscuta reflexa and C. chinensis seedlings. The per cent seed germination was higher in mechanically scarified seeds. The seedlings showed non-functional vestigial roots, without root cap. It contained limited meristematic tissue. The root hairs, meristem, vascular bundle and the cells of vestigial root cortex degenerated within very short time, leading to inability of water and minerals absorption. These changes in primary root enable the species to adopt with modification for sucking root. Top Keywords Cuscuta reflexa, Cuscuta chinensis, Vestigial roots. Top |
