Income pattern of ntfp in Nandurbar district of Maharashtra

Abstract

The Toranmal, a hill station in Nandurbar district of Maharashtra, that saw villagers earning their livelihood collecting forest produce, planting saplings and creating water bodies through MGNREGA for irrigation. This study is based on different types of NTFPs available in study region and . the contribution of NTFPs to tribal cash income. The primary data is collected through questionnaires, observations and personal discussions with villagers dominated by NTFPs collectors. Out of 264 villages of Satpura Mountain area in Akkalkuwa and Akrani tahsil 9 villages are selected as sample villages by random sampling method. Near about 264 households were selected as sample household engaged in NTFPs activities. The secondary data is collected through the unpublished records of the government and various publications such as topo sheets, district census handbook of Nandurbar and Dhule district. The average income from all sectors per year is around (Rs.33417) of which through NTFPs is the highes (Rs.18616) 55.71 percent, the income from animal wealth (Rs. 6284) 18.80 percent and income from agriculture (Rs. 4420) 13.23 percent to the total cash income per household per annum. Further, average income from labour, wage and handicrafts etc. around (Rs. 4097) 12.26 percent to the total income HH/year. Contribution of Non-Timber forest products varied from as low from as Olame (Myna Loxiflora) Rs.5.00 to the extent of Amchoor and Mango seeds about Rs.7696.00 HH/Year in sample villages in the study area, Mahua flowers, Chiranji (Charoli), Tadi, Mahua seeds and Hirada with Rs. 6519, 2749, 685, 567 and 368 HH/Year was respectively to the total cash income from the Non-timber forest products.
