Abstract

Poverty alleviation programmes can only be a short-term strategy. In the long run elimination of poverty has to come from the growth process itself. Areas having high employment potential should be targeted for higher economic growth through long term investment. Generation of self-employment for the poor in rural areas is one of the important components of anti-poverty and rural development strategy adopted by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. SGSY is aimed at bringing the assisted poor families (swarozgaries, above the poverty line in three years by providing them income-generating assets through a way of bank credit and government subsidy, ensuring at least Rs.2,000 net income to the assisted families. The present research paper is an attempt to analyse the role of SGSY in poverty alleviation in Tumkur district of Karnataka State. For this study a sample size of 250 swarozgaris in Tumkur district has been selected. The sample respondents have been selected on the basis of simple random sampling technique. From the study it has been found that Out of 250 respondents, 228 respondent swarozgaris accounting for 91.2 percent have asserted that they have been fully employed after availing of the SGSY Loan.
