Impact tourism industry on poverty in India – An empirical analysis

Abstract

Poverty is a complex socio-economic state and is regarded both a condition of economic inefficiency and condition of social and political exclusion. It is one of the serious problems of the present generation. Tourism has been identified by more than half of the world's poorest countries as an effective means to take part in the global economy and reduce poverty. In addition, Tourism is increasingly a major, if not the main source of growth, employment, income and revenue for many of the world's developing countries. Main objective of this paper is to measure the impact of tourism on poverty in India. Panel data regression is used to estimate the influence of tourism and PCI on poverty. Result reveals that tourism has a significant influence on poverty. The result suggests that tourism as one of the means for reduction of poverty in India.
