Abstract

This paper attempts explain about problem faced by the farmers and market intermediaries in the border regulated market. The study was based on primary data, obtained through personal interview method using well-structured and pre-tested schedule. The study revealed that major problem faced by the farmers in the border markets was the lack of competitive bidding due to poor arrivals thereby attracting fewer traders to the market and also discrimination by traders/market authorities based on nativity/mother tongue. Major problem faced by market intermediaries was poor arrivals, and hence, low turnover followed by quality constraints, price difference at traditional and regulated markets, immediate cash payment of sale proceeds to farmers, seasonality of arrivals and wastage of produce during loading and unloading.
