Abstract The role of ‘emotional intelligence’ in management has occupied the attention of both theorists and practitioners alike. Of late, its role has also been considered significant in evaluating the managerial performance hasgiven the exposure to regulate emotions is a positive trait. Research on emotional intelligence, despite its importance, is limited. This study, therefore, uses an experimental design to explore the impact of emotional intelligence on employee performance.The research was carried out in various banks in northern India. A questionnaire was designed to explore whether there was a relationship between emotional intelligence scores and scores from employee performance assessment. The relationship was explored using an analysis of correlation. The effect of exogenous variables, e.g., age, intrinsic and extrinsic variables on EI score was also explored.The analysis found statistically significant positive correlations between emotional intelligence and employee performance in banking sector. All the different exogenous variables, age, intrinsic and extrinsic variables were found to correlate positively with EI score.
