Abstract The study focuses on exploring the phytochemical constituents and the bioactive potentials of Chara hydropitys Reich, an IUCN Red listed freshwater macroalgae collected from Poondi Lake, Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, India. Sequential solvent extraction on the fine powdered macroalgae species exploit its phytochemical constituents followed by bioactive and cytotoxic property. The antimicrobial properties of C. hydropitys was observed only in the hexane extract. However, the ethanolic extract showed a higher flavonoid concentration with 1.54 mg/mL. The antioxidant properties of this extract showed a significant radical scavenging potential and is comparable to the in-vitro cytotoxic study on Cardiomyocyte cell lines HL-1 and AC-16 with 83% and 76% of cell death, respectively. The study thus establishes the ethanolic extracts of C. hydropitys, to possess bioactive compounds which may contribute for the development of therapeutic agents.
