Abstract

Present report deals with the investigation of abortion in goats caused by Leptospira infection. The peritoneal fluid and blood samples were collected from aborted foetuses. On the basis of dark field microscopy, culture isolation and foetal pathology, the aetiological agent was confirmed to be Leptospira spp. Histopathologically, foetal liver and kidneys showed severe degenerative changes and infiltration of mononuclear inflammatory cells along with congestion and haemorrhages. In the liver, giant cell hepatocytes and dissociation of hepatic cords and in the kidneys, tubular ectasia and giant cells were also noted. The dam's sera were found negative for Brucella antibodies. Leptospira spp. was identified in sera samples of aborted foetuses by dark field microscopy and isolation of the organism.
