Abstract Each and every bank group of Indian banking sector is suffering from the problem of NPAs and keeps on trying to reduce its amount and to recover the maximum amount as it can through various possible measures. Various types of channels are helping the banking sector in recovering these NPAs. Keeping this thing in mind, a comparative study of various bank groups w.r.t. their NPAs and about the role of different channels like Lok Adalat, Debt Recovery Tribunals, SARFAESI Act, etc in recovering these NPAs of the banking sector is done for the study period of 2007–08 to 2010–11. The results of the study reveal that Old Private bank group and New Private bank group is doing well in controlling their NPAs and DRTs and SARFAESI Act are the most significant channels of NPAs recovery for the commercial banks and Lok Adalats are not doing enough for the commercial banks in helping them in recovering their NPAs.
