Abstract The modern Jammu and Kashmir State is founded by Maharaja Gulab Singh after the Treaty of Amritsar, signed on 16th March 1846 between British Indian Government and Maharaja of Jammu. By the treaty, Gulab Singh took the possession of "all the hilly or mountainous country with its dependencies situated to the eastward of the River Indus and the westward of the River Ravi including Chamba and excluding Lahul, being part of the territories ceded to the British Government by the Lahore State according to the provisions of Article IV of the Treaty of Lahore, dated 9th March, 1846.” Maharaja consolidated the state and was succeeded by Ranbir Singh (1856–1885), Pratap Singh (1885–1925) and Hari Singh (1925–1952). Maharaja Hari Singh continued till 1961 as only title. He brought a number of reforms in various fields for the development of the people of the Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir i.e. Social Reforms, Educational reforms, Economic Reforms, and Agrarian Reforms etc. These reforms put far reaching impact on the administration and common man in the development of the society.
