Abstract Rapid growth of aquaculture has immense pressure on feed ingredients like fishmeal, fish oil, oil cakes, food grains etc. There is severe demand for these ingredient in animal feed industry due to this the cost of this ingredients are escalating rapidly. Use of these ingredients for production of aquatic organism has many detrimental effect on environment and also unsustainable for rapid expansion of aquaculture all over the world. To minimize the cost of production and also reduce the environmental impact of using these ingredients, use of periphyton technology is one of the best options in present scenario. Periphyton basedaquaculture technique in been usedtraditionally in South-East Asia, North-East India, Srilanka, Africa etc. Periphytonis a complex sessile biota which includes phytoplankton, zooplankton and other organisms in combination with biofilms, which grow on any substratum submerged in water. Periphyton provides nutritious food to the culture aquatic organisms with little input like fixing of substratum and to some extent fertilization of aquatic body. This is an attempt to elucidate the knowledge like selection of appropriate substratum, compatible fish species, stocking densities, with and without feeding etc., which are been contributed by different workers in developing the scientific based periphyton aquaculture technology for sustainable aquaculture.
