Abstract

A total of 20 nasal septa of cattle were collected from slaughter house of Nagpur city, Maharashtra. Grossly, multiple gran-ulomatous nodules of varying size were present on nasal septa. Microscopically, sections of nasal growths revealed presence of Schistosoma nasale ova in submucosa and muscularis layer of the nasal passage surrounded by infiltration of macrophages and few lymphocytes. The primers were designed to amplify mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase (cox-1) gene of Schistosoma nasale (S. nasale) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The primer amplified a fragment of 279 bp of mitochondrial gene, cox-1. The phy-logenetic analysis of cox-1 gene of mitochondrial genome revealed that the Indian S. nasale closely related with the Sri Lankan and Nepalean S. nasale.
