Host Range Studies of the Virus Causing Mosaic Disease in Sponge Gourd Pawar N. B., Nirmal D. D., Ahire D. B., Somawane G.T. Department of Plant Pathology, Marathwada Agricultural University, Parbhani Abstract Among the thirty three plant species belonging to different families viz; caricaceae, Chenopodiceae, Cucurbitaceae, Leguminaceae and Solanaceae, only twelve species of cucurbitaceae family were systemically infected by present virus and the per cent transmission of the present virus varies from 75- 87 per cent as per host species. However, twenty one plant species from four families were not infected by the present virus and the only assay host which was locally infected was Chenopodium amaraticolor. The systemic symptoms produced by the virus upon mechanical inoculation on sponge gourd were similar to those produced by plants infected naturally. The virus produces vein clearing and mosaic symptoms initially in almost all the tested cucurbitaceous host. Thus, on the basis of symptomatology reaction the present virus was tentatively identified as watermelon mosaic virus-1 (WMV-1).
