Abstract

A total of thirty two newly developedsugarcane clones along with three standard checks viz., Co VC 99463, Co 86032 and Co 62175 were inrandomized complete block design with two replicates at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, V.C. Farm, Mandya to study variability parameters for cane and sugar yield and quality traits and to formulate selection indices through discriminant function analysis. The results indicated significant differences among the genotypes for all the characters. Genetic variability estimates revealed that large amount of variability was noticed for most of the characters under study. Thirty one different selection indices were formulated based on various combinations of five characters considered for construction of selection indices for cane and CCS yield. For cane yield, higher relative efficiency (140.36) coupled with high genetic advance (36.07) was exhibited by the combination involving four characters viz., Millable Canes, Single Cane weight, Millable Cane length and number of internodes. For CCS yield, higher relative efficiency (868.37) coupled with high genetic advance (27.58) was exhibited by the combination involving four characters viz., per cent Brix, per cent pol, per cent CCS and Cane yield. It was therefore, suggestive that after primary selection for cane yield the selection be based on millable canes, single cane weight, millable cane length and number of internodes for maximum improvement in cane yieldand after primary selection for sugar content the selection be based on per cent Brix, per cent pol, per cent CCS and Cane yield for maximum improvement in sugar yield.
