Online published on 19 November, 2013. Abstract The study assessed performance appraisal system in selected Information technology companies and Non-Information technology companies of Mysore. A total of 160 (58 IT and 102 non- IT) employees from IT and Non- IT companies were selected through stratified random sampling technique who answered modified questionnaire of Rao et al. (2000). Two-way analysis of variance technique was employed to find out the differences between sectors as well as technical and non-technical employees of IT and non-IT sectors including interaction effects. Significant difference between sectors was not found except on the component ‘rules and regulations’. Significant difference between Technical and non-technical employees were found on most of the components except ‘task and target orientation’ and ‘open communication’. On the whole, performance appraisal was found to be higher among non-technical employees than technical employees, irrespective of the sectors. Interaction effects revealed that, qualification related difference existed on various components like, rules and regulation, interpersonal relations, training and development needs, role and responsibility of employees and the total performance appraisal scores, where non- technical groups had higher PA in IT and technical groups had higher PA in non IT sector.
