Prevention of plagiarism in academic research in India: An initiative of University Grant Commission (UGC) Dr. Dubey Jitendra Kumar Deputy Librarian, Shri Vishwakarma Skill University, Dudhola, Palwal, Haryana Online published on 28 January, 2019. Abstract Today, Plagiarism cases are increasing in Indian higher education system due to the academic dishonesty and a breach of journalistic ethics. The University Grant Commission (UGC), the apex body of higher educational institutions like Universities, Colleges in India had constituted a committee of experts to look into the issues of ‘plagiarism and to recommended to appropriate institutional mechanism for eliminating the scope for this menace in the country. After going into different issues pertaining to plagiarism, the committee prepared the draft “University Grant Commission (promotion of Academic Integrity and Prevention of Plagiarism in higher education institutions”. The regulation draft uploaded to the UGC website for comments, criticism and suggestions by the scholars of higher education institutions. An attempt is made in this paper to present different aspects of plagiarism and analysis of the UGC draft regulations for prevention of plagiarism in academic research with suggestions wherever necessary for improvement.
